CONTENT

This training is organized as an international course under the title Geography Field Study Visits revisited”. The program of the structured course includes study field visits to very interesting locations in Greece, where the participants are going to recognize different geographical/geological formations, create lesson plans on particular geological sites, discuss with scientists and exchange views on teaching and learning of Geography and Geology.

This course, “Geography Field Study Visits revisited”, is structured on three different modules:

A. The introduction to Geography/geology field work for primary and secondary schools;

B. The methodology of field work in geography and geology learning;

C. The interpretation of the collected data from the field work.

The course is focused on the central issue of improving the overall educational quality at your school by:

·         Working with certain objectives

·         Complying with the wider demand for active learning

·         Providing hands on teaching and learning for geography and geology

·         Improving geography and geology teaching and learning quality and effectiveness

The training course is designed as a residential seminar for 6 days in Athens (Greece).

It is open to education staff, especially for teachers of geography and geology, principals and vice-principals, school educators of schools and centers for adult education.

METHODOLOGY

This course employs a variety of teaching-learning approaches and methods. There is a mix of workshops, with presentations and lectures, self and team reflection, pair work, small group activities, peer teaching sessions, case studies, and particularly field visits and field work. The field work will influence the overall outcome of the course.  The participants will be provided with a PDF document about Sustainable School and Sustainable School Indicators at the beginning of the course.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS PARTICIPANTS ARE EXPECTED TO ACQUIRE


Participants are expected to acquire the following, attending the course:

Knowledge:

  1. Short history of Geography Worldwide, in Europe and in Greece
  2. The schope, the objectives, the values  and the guiding principles of Geography
  3. Different aspects of Geography at school
  4. Teaching geographhy at school. Main principles
  5. Geography and extracuricular projects
  6. Geography and outdoor learning

Skills

  1. Setting, running, presenting and evaluating an outdoor geography project
  2. Improving students’ performance through the improvement of their collaboration abilities
  3. Improving self esteem through the interaction with students
  4. Creation of new geography learning activities for the classroom and outdoors
  5. Guiding a team of students for a geography outdoor project
  6. Organizing, from all aspects, a geography field trip outdoors

 

PREPARATION

The participants will receive suggestions for reading material in order to prepare for the course well in advance. Visiting the webpage www.aeiforum.eu where much of relevant information is available is highly recommended.

The participants will be asked to fill in a special questionnaire about their training needs before the course. They will also be asked to prepare a presentation about their school’s daily operation and their country.

FOLLOW UP

By the end of the course participants are asked to reflect on their learning experience and report accordingly. They will also be asked to fill in an evaluation questionnaire about the fulfillment of their expectations. A special networking session will take place at the end of the course.

50% of the tuition fee for cancelation at any time

The tuition fee is € 350(5days of tuition)
